A reckless plan for health care

by Suzanne Bonamici

This week House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy floated a reckless plan in the news, saying he’s willing to repeal the Affordable Care Act first and replace it "later."

And to make matters worse, President-elect Trump announced his appointment of Congressman Tom Price to head the Department of Health and Human Services. In Congress, Rep. Price has consistently worked to dismantle and privatize Medicare, defund Planned Parenthood, and repeal the Affordable Care Act.

I won’t stand for this and neither will the American people.

The Republican plan for our health care system is a disaster. Repealing the ACA, privatizing Medicare, and block-granting Medicaid could mean:

About 20 million Americans - including young adults, middle class families, seniors, and people with preexisting conditions - would lose their coverage;

Millions of low-income Americans could lose Medicaid;

Planned Parenthood would be defunded and it will be harder for women to access reproductive health care services - including contraception;

Medicare as we know it would be gone, and seniors and people with disabilities would be stripped of the benefits they rely on and need; and

Private health insurance companies would get more power and profits. Things look bad, but we’ve beat back heartless proposals like these before. I know that - together - we’ll do everything we can to beat these, too.

This affects too many Americans, and we must organize and fight. Health care should not be privilege that only the healthy and rich can enjoy. I’m ready to stand up to these regressive proposals and fight to increase, not take away, access to health care.
