Those who oppose raising the minimum wage probably think that the average minimum wage worker is a high school student bagging groceries for the summer to earn extra walking-around money. The reality is that three-quarters of minimum wage workers are 20 and older. Half are women. And many are struggling to support a family, sometimes piecing together two or three jobs at a time.
People who work full-time should not live in poverty. But at the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, many families are living below the federal poverty line. That’s why I am supporting the Raise the Wage Act to bring the federal minimum up to $12 per hour and index it to the national median wage.
