Chaos in Congress

Something very unusual happened today in the U.S. House, Megen.

In a closed-door meeting, the Republican majority failed to select a candidate for Speaker of the House. It appears that a group of extreme anti-government members is holding the rest of their party hostage, demanding more government shutdowns, less compromise, and more chaos.

This was a disturbing development, not only for those of us in Congress who want to work together, but especially for the American people who are counting on us to do our job.

We have important work to do, and there is a majority in Congress that is willing to do it -- if only the Majority leaders would stop bowing to the demands of their most extreme members. Together, Republicans and Democrats could pass legislation addressing climate change, transportation, and longterm government funding -- without defunding Planned Parenthood.

We'll get through this chaos, Megen. When we do, I'm hopeful that Republican leaders will have learned a lesson and we can get to work on the issues that matter to the people of NW Oregon.

With appreciation,
