Hobby Lobby: Wrong Direction
When women make decisions about their reproductive health care, who should be involved? The woman and her doctor. Who should not be involved? Employers and politicians. That’s something most Americans understand – yet that’s not how a majority of Supreme Court justices see it.
Today’s Hobby Lobby Supreme Court decision is a setback, no doubt about it. According to the opinion, closely-held corporations can cite religious objections and deny contraception coverage to women employees. This sets a terrible precedent. Corporations should not be able to impose their religious beliefs on their employees. It’s as simple as that.
This won’t be the last word on this issue. In recent years we’ve made progress toward making sure that every American has access to health care. I’ll work with my colleagues in Congress to find a solution so we can restore contraception coverage for all women.
