Sign the Petition: overturn Citizens United!

by Suzanne Bonamici

When I first ran to represent the Beaverton area in the Oregon Legislature, we won by devoting countless hours to knocking on doors and talking directly with voters. I'm proud of the way we ran that campaign, and that we continue to build on the grassroots support that started back then in 2006.

Today, people-powered campaigns like ours are threatened by the growing influence of big money in our democracy. Unfortunately it’s been made worse by the U.S. Supreme Court’s decisions in the Citizens United and McCutcheon cases, which struck down the modest limits on campaign spending that were previously in place. Without these limits, out-of-sate millionaires and billionaires, like the Koch Brothers, can spend unlimited sums to influence the outcomes of our elections -- with almost no reporting requirements to show the public where the money came from, or how it was used.

All of this means more negative ads on TV and deceptive mail in your mailbox -- not the informed debate about issues that voters deserve. This shift in the tone and cost of political debate is why I am supporting an effort in the U.S. House of Representatives to pass an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would effectively overturn these recent decisions and restore our right to limit and regulate spending in our elections.

Please sign the petition and show your support for a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United and McCutcheon!

Adopting a constitutional amendment is no small task. It will require activism and a strong showing of support from the American people in all 50 states. Your support makes a big difference.

Thank you for taking a stand on this critical issue!
