Sign the Petition: on Oil Trains, let's put safety first!
Our government should put our safety first.
Unfortunately, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has not put safety first in its regulation of trains carrying crude oil across Oregon.
Close to 20,000 tank cars filled with highly flammable crude oil, originating from the Midwest, are now passing through Oregon every year on their way to the coast. In other parts of the country and in Canada we’ve seen massive explosions result from oil train derailments. A derailment and explosion around Portland or another populated area could be absolutely devastating.
The dangers posed by an accident are bad enough -- but they are made worse by a loophole in DOT regulations: our local authorities are given no advance notice of oil trains routes or schedules. That means our first responders might not be prepared to respond immediately to an oil train derailment or explosion.
It’s time for the DOT to close this loophole. The safety of our communities is why Senator Wyden, Senator Merkley, and I are calling on the DOT to do just that. I hope you’ll join me and add your name.
Sign the Petition: tell DOT to put safety first and close the oil train loophole!
By joining together we can make our voices heard on this critical issue for our state.
Thank you for standing with me!
