Bipartisan Weather Forecasting Bill

Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici highlighted the improved research and potential for more timely and accurate forecasts in the Weather Research and Forecasting Innovation Act, which passed in the House this week.

“This bipartisan bill includes new provisions to strengthen weather forecasting,” Congresswoman Bonamici said. “It places an emphasis on modeling and advanced technology to improve the accuracy of forecasts. It also improves collaboration between the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research and the National Weather Service, which will also help the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) develop more accurate, real-time forecasts of weather patterns.”

H.R. 1561 also outlines new measures to effectively communicate warnings about extreme weather events ahead of time to help residents in vulnerable communities prepare. Congresswoman Bonamici, Ranking Member of the Environment Subcommittee on the Science, Space, and Technology Committee, negotiated the bill with Congressman Jim Bridenstine (R-OK), Congressman Chris Stewart (R-UT), and Congressman Frank Lucas (R-OK).

“The changes in this bill will make NOAA more forward-looking in developing and deploying forecast innovations and technology. For farmers or residents living in areas prone to severe weather events, it will help them prepare for potentially damaging weather. And for researchers, it will help them refine their data and improve their models, all of which will help save lives and property,” Congresswoman Bonamici said. “I am pleased we were able to come to a bipartisan agreement to strengthen weather forecasting.”
