[Petition] Children can't defend themselves in court.
Subjects typically covered in preschool:
Colors and shapes
Standing in line
Sharing toys
Did you notice that U.S. immigration law and public speaking aren’t on that list?
Of course they aren’t – we’re talking about three and four year olds! And yet, in the United States, our courts expect unaccompanied children as young as three years old to defend themselves in immigration proceedings.
I’m not kidding.
A federal immigration judge even argued that it’s fair, saying:
“I’ve taught immigration law literally to 3-year-olds and 4-year-olds... It takes a lot of time. It takes a lot of patience. They get it… You can do a fair hearing.”
Many of these unaccompanied children fled unspeakable violence and tragedy in Central America. After overcoming so much, the least we can do is treat these children in a humane manner that reflects our American values. Instead, the Justice Department forces them to appear in court without any legal representation.
I won’t stand for it, and I hope you won’t either. Sign the petition: tell Congress that child immigrants deserve legal representation!
Forcing these kids to go to court without representation is shameful. Please sign our petition today.
With appreciation,
