I'm not surprised
I was disappointed (but not surprised) that President Trump had very little to say about education in his address to Congress on Tuesday. In fact, the only education issue he mentioned was “school choice” – which to him means privatizing public schools.
**President Trump and Secretary DeVos want to privatize our public schools, taking us back to a time when students were without civil rights protections.
I won’t stand for that.**
Our public schools are critical to providing equal access to education for everyone – not just a privileged few. I will vigorously fight efforts to privatize public education and roll back civil rights protections.
Our schools must level the playing field and create opportunities for all students to reach their dreams.
I worked my way through community college, college, and law school, and I understand the power of a good public education. All students should have the opportunity I had, no matter where they live, or their race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability status.
When we prepare our students, we build a bridge to the middle class, and our economy and citizens thrive.
Anything less is unacceptable. I refuse to back down on equal access to education.
