Happy World Oceans Day
It's World Oceans Day, and a good time to recognize the importance of healthy oceans. Our neighbors to the north in Canada first proposed World Oceans Day at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. And what a good idea it was! Celebrating oceans and how we can protect them is crucial in our efforts to curb climate change and take care of the planet.
Oceans cover about 70 percent of the Earth's surface, and they support all forms of life on our planet and balance our ecosystem. They also support economies around the world, including fishing and tourism.
In Congress, I'm proud to co-chair the bipartisan House Oceans Caucus to help educate my colleagues about why the health of our oceans must be considered a national and global priority. As an Oregonian, I know that tourism, fishing and crabbing industries, and our health depend on a coastline that is clean and free from toxic waste.
The health of our oceans is critical to a healthy planet and a healthy economy, so I am doing all I can to stop threats from oil rigs, polluters, and other waste that harms marine life.
On World Oceans Day and every day that I serve in Congress, I'm fighting to protect our natural resources.
Thank you for standing with me,
Suzanne
