I have spent my career standing up for consumers and small businesses
Strong and fair consumer protection laws help keep hard-earned dollars in the pockets of consumers. They also level the playing field for the honest small businesses that are the backbone of our communities.
I have spent my career standing up for consumers and small businesses – first at Legal Aid, then as an attorney at the Federal Trade Commission and in private practice, in the Oregon State Legislature where I served as Chair of the Senate Consumer Protection Committee, and now as a Member of Congress.
I have taken on unscrupulous financial firms when they have deceived the American people. I've fought predatory lending firms and deceptive mortgage companies that were cheating homeowners. I've cracked down on payday lenders, and prevented insurance companies from taking advantage of seniors.
As a member of Congress, I'm working to make sure that student loan borrowers get more and better information about the terms of their loans. I've strengthened regulations against elder abuse, and I'm fighting to close loopholes that allow payday lenders to circumvent state laws by doing business online.
In 2019, I'll continue working to make sure that businesses play by the rules and don't gain an unfair advantage by unscrupulous practices. That's good for the honest businesses and good for consumers.
P.S. Oregon gives most taxpayers a credit of $50 when they donate $50 or more to Oregon political campaigns before the end of the year. It's a dollar-for-dollar credit on the first $50 in donations you make to any Oregon political campaign. Please chip in $50 now!
