open arms, open hearts
There's a humanitarian crisis at our Southern border. I recently visited the US-Mexico border in Brownsville, TX and Matamoros, Mexico. I was there to investigate the Trump administration's Remain in Mexico policy and the use of tent court facilities to adjudicate asylum cases.
The suffering I saw in the massive refugee camp in Matamoros was heartbreaking.
I met a mother from El Salvador, who explained that her child is very sick. She waved me over to the opening of her tent, where I saw her sick baby on the floor. This is just one story. There are countless others like it.
The way this Administration treats asylum seekers is unacceptable.
The families I met traveled to the United States seeking a better life. They are escaping violence in countries where they are unsafe.
The families in the refugee camp have sponsors or family members already in the United States. We need to open our arms and open our hearts and let them make their legal case for asylum in the United States of America.
The Trump administration's policies are inhumane, cruel, and don't reflect who we are as a country.
