Vote by mail: An easy solution for a complicated problem
Oregon is fortunate to have a well-established vote-by-mail system. Many other states have followed in recent years, but it's never been more urgent to expand this option nationwide.
What happened in Wisconsin this week is unacceptable. Not postponing the Primary election and significantly reducing the number of polling places during the coronavirus pandemic meant that thousands of people stood in extremely long lines and put themselves at risk to vote. We must act now so this doesn't happen again.
It's a complicated problem with a simple solution: voting by mail.
This year, voting by mail isn't just convenient – it could be life-saving.
- Vulnerable populationS shouldn't have to choose between a potentially deadly exposure to COVID-19 and exercising their right to vote.
- Essential workers shouldn't have to leave work to stand in line at polling places.
- Health care providers who cannot return home to their families because of their exposure to COVID-19 certainly can't put their communities at risk at the polls.
- Poll workers shouldn't have to risk their health to work at election sites during a pandemic.
