The attack on the Capitol and what comes next:

A riotous mob invaded the U.S. Capitol with the full encouragement and support of Donald Trump. These were not protestors. They were domestic terrorists, bent on destruction and the overthrow of a free and fair election.

My colleagues and I, who were there doing the work of the people, spent the afternoon and evening under lockdown as angry, armed agitators roamed the halls destroying property and threatening democracy.

Everyone responsible — including the president — must be held accountable for their actions. I support the immediate removal of President Trump, whether that's through the 25th amendment, his own resignation, or another impeachment proceeding. Even one more day of Trump in the White House is too dangerous to our country.

As a parent volunteer, I used to teach young people about civics and government. Our representative democracy has endured for more than 200 years through many challenges, and it will endure this threat as well. The outrageous actions of Donald Trump and his allies will not stop the will of the people. They did not stop our certification of the Electoral College, and they will not stop the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on January 20th.

This is a moment in history that is fraught with uncertainty. Our democracy is being threatened, and we must defend it. But I have faith in the American people. We will overcome it. We will move forward. And we will get to work.

Thank you for standing with me,

Suzanne
