Millions of seniors struggle with food insecurity

Fifty years ago, Congress did a remarkable thing by including the Senior Nutrition Program in the Older Americans Act.

And for decades, it's been a staple of health and survival for many of our friends and neighbors.

During my time in Congress, I've led the effort – twice – to update this legislation and strengthen the social safety net for people who need it.

The Senior Nutrition Program funds programs like Meals on Wheels America, a non-profit organization that delivers meals to seniors across the country. I've joined the wonderful volunteers to deliver meals, and I've experienced how the interaction can help address social isolation among people in our communities.

About nine million seniors in America struggle with food insecurity, 15 million live in isolation, and 18 million live near or below the poverty line.

These important nutrition programs are needed and deeply appreciated. I'm celebrating this 50-year milestone and all the people the program has served, and I'm continuing my work in Congress to do more to support our seniors.

Fifty years from now, I want future generations to celebrate our accomplishments. I want future generations to celebrate legislation that creates a better future by protecting the health and well-being of American seniors.

Let's get to it.
