Protecting marriage equality
Yesterday was a good day for love!
I proudly helped the House pass the Respect for Marriage Act to enshrine marriage equality in federal law. Along with 257 of my colleagues, we sent the message that love is love and discrimination is wrong. The bill is now headed to President Biden's desk.
After the President signs the bill into law, the federal government will recognize LGTBQ+ and interracial marriages, and so will all states if the couple wed in a state where the marriage is legal. The legislation also repeals the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act.
This is a decisive victory in protecting the rights of Americans. And although there is more work to do to end discrimination, I know we can win this fight.
Thank you for standing with me.
