What the Dept. of Education cuts mean for you:
The Trump administration and Elon Musk are continuing their assault on public education.
They are firing thousands of workers and slashing budgets to effectively stop the Department of Education from functioning. We knew this was coming – I wrote to you about their plans last month, and this is straight out of the Project 2025 playbook. But that doesn't make it any less devastating for students, educators, and the country.
Public education has the power to change lives. The Department of Education provides important funding to help local schools function. It's why Title I schools have the additional resources they need for low-income students. It's why schools get additional funding for students with disabilities. And with programs like Pell grants, it's why more students can access higher education. The department does not control school curriculum as Trump and his allies imply.
Congress created the Department of Education and only Congress can end it. But we know that Donald Trump and his team don't follow the rules. That's why we'll be fighting back – on the House floor, in the courts, and on the streets.
I hope you'll join me in speaking out and sharing your support for public education.
Thank you for standing with me,
Suzanne
