My values:
I've never taken an election for granted. With the primary coming up soon, I want you to know who I am and why I'll never stop fighting against Trump's destruction and for a better future.
From a young age, my mom taught me to speak up against injustice, protect the planet, and always keep learning and teaching. She was a piano teacher and small business owner who marched in the streets against war and for civil rights.
After I graduated from high school, I took some years off to figure out what I wanted to do. I volunteered and then worked at Legal Aid, where I quickly learned that people don't struggle by choice. I attended Lane Community College, and later the University of Oregon and U of O Law School. Because I was on my own, I used grants, loans, food stamps, and work-study to get me through. Today, costs are up and many students can't access the same systems of support, so they end up with too much debt.
My first job as a lawyer was in Washington, D.C., where I did consumer protection law. After a few years in D.C., I moved back to Oregon to start a family. When my kids started in the Beaverton school district, I saw how cuts to public education took away opportunities for arts, second languages, and the well-rounded classes students need to thrive in a changing economy. And I saw fewer opportunities in zip codes with lower-income families. I followed the example set by my mom and protested, organized, and later ran for office.
Now, as your representative, I'm fighting back against Trump's attempts to take away civil rights protections for kids with disabilities and divert public dollars to private school vouchers. I'm fighting for real investment in our kids because it's the best investment we can make. And as the late Senator Paul Wellstone said, we all do better when all do better.
It's a challenging time. We need a functioning democracy and trustworthy elections to achieve our goals, but Donald Trump and his billionaire friends are trying to make it harder to vote and undermine our locally-run elections. We will not let this stand. We will show up, we will be heard, and we will vote to take back the majority in the House.
I'm running for re-election to create a better future for the people I'm honored to represent and for generations to come. In my work, I strive for an economy that works for everyone – not just those at the top. Despite the unfathomable challenges, a better world is possible, and I'll keep fighting for it every day.
Thank you for standing with me,
Suzanne
