It doesn’t have to be this way
I support a common-sense approach to gun safety. Most Americans do too.
Mass shootings and other gun violence have become so frequent that we regularly see hundreds of people killed in Oregon in a single year. And sadly, firearm-related injuries are the leading cause of death for children and teens.
It doesn't have to be this way.
Our kids deserve to grow up in a place where walking down the street isn't dangerous and where eating lunch in the school cafeteria does not result in tragedy.
It's been a tough road toward progress, but I will not stop fighting until American kids are safe to learn and grow without fear of gun violence.
The first weekend in June is Wear Orange Weekend to honor those who lost their lives to gun violence and to spread awareness for common sense gun violence prevention.
While some of my colleagues in Congress – and their allies in the NRA – sit back as we experience one of the highest rates of gun violence in the developed world, I'm working to pass universal background checks and keep weapons of war off our streets.
Too many in this country have been harmed by gun violence. I'll do everything I can to pass policies in Congress that make our streets, schools, and communities safer for all of us.
Thank you for standing with me, and I hope you'll join me in wearing orange this weekend.
